Moving house tips: 8 weeks ahead

Plan whether the removal company is coming, or it is a self-move. Be realistic. If you have a gammy leg or have torn a tendon in your shoulder, you will not be able to recover quickly enough to do a self-move. You need at least 2 people to move sofas and cupboards. Plan now.

You will need to hire vans and book friends in to help. Evaluate for how long you will need the van, depending on the size of your home and the amount of belongings you own. There are moving websites that help you to evaluate this. Always over-estimate slightly rather than find you have to start choosing what things to leave behind as we had the misfortune to do. Yes really! We ended up leaving a forest of potted plants with a local neighbour, as we misjudged the size of the van on moving day.

Book time off work. Start to pack non-essential items and put them in a place that won’t be needed to be used until moving day. Start an inventory of stuff, both on numbered boxes and in a journal.

As the year nears its end, I find myself wondering about the sanity of starting a blog.
